Yeah he is a Wednesdayite.
Never met him myself but he seems pretty decent on interviews. I need to buy his book

Got to be Freddie Trueman for me, he epitomises the grit and power that us great Yorkshiremen have, coupled with the driest sense of humour endemic in the region.thornabyred wrote:Boyks
Having said that , the humour and grit is there for all to see in the other players mentioned and the pure stubbornness that is in our genes.

Re: greatest yorkshire cricketers
Geoff Boycott is an obvious one for someone of my Generation.
Also Freddie Trueman will get plenty of votes but i would like everyone to remember some of the others of a great era:
Jack Hampshire
Phil Sharp
Jimmy Binks
Brian Close
Don Wilson
All legends and all Yorkshire men.
Not forgetting Boro's own
Chris Old

There's not many there that you would choose to cross physically and certainly not verbally.

Went to the same school as Chris and Alan Old. Chris was a couple of years above me.
Re: greatest yorkshire cricketers
Was that Acklam Hall school?
I think Alan Old went on to be a teacher there.
Good fly half for Boro sheffield and England.

My Dad always used to talk about Bill Bowes and how good he was. Boycott for all his faults was a brilliant technical cricketer but Jack Hampshire was a flair batsman, two very good keepers as well David Bairstow and Richard Blakey.

Just prior to my era (and that of Boycott) was Brian Close a great technical player and somebody that NOBODY would cross!

Re: greatest yorkshire cricketers
I remember watching in the days of black and white tv, a Yorkshire match with Close fielding at short leg. The batsman got one down leg side and took a massive swing and caught the ball just right and it smashed into Brian Close's leg. He just stooped down, picked the ball up and looked at the batsman and threw it back to the bowler. A few minutes later they went back and showed a closer picture of Close's leg, there was a large bloody patch on his trousers and the blood was trickling onto his boots. He never even flinched. It must intimidate you to have a bloke as hard as that standing right behind you all the time. Great cricketer.

Both were as hard as nails but imo you would need both together to have had a fair scrap with Close.
