BORO believe they've discovered a new wing wonder in Cameron Park.
After developing homegrown Academy heroes Stewart Downing and Adam Johnson, it looks like the club has unearthed another gem of a left winger in 18-year-old Park.
The Marske teenager was all set to make to make his first team debut in Saturday’s clash with Hull City until the weather intervened.
Manager Tony Mowbray reluctantly concluded that the snow-covered pitch wouldn’t suit Park’s delightful close control and ball skills and he had to make do with a seat on the bench.
There’s no doubt, however, that the gifted youngster will make his first start sooner rather than later.
Mowbray is keen to keep the lid on any potential over-hyping of Park, but did tell the Gazette that he’s been impressed by the reserve team regular.
“It’s fair to say he’s a talent,” said the Boro boss.
“Has he caught my eye? I think his talent catches anybody’s eye when they watch a football match and yet I don’t want to build him up and put any extra pressure on him.
“He’s just a young boy who is in the mould of some pretty good players who have come through the ranks at this club over the years.
“He has to develop, he has to find a maturity as a lad and we have to find the right opportunities to dip him in and dip him out until we think he’s ready to impact on the team.
“But he has undoubted talent and exciting talent. We’ll find the right time to utilise that I hope.”
Referring to Saturday’s game, Mowbray added: “I had a Cameron on the bench and I was going to give his debut.
“He’s a dribbler, somebody who beats players, but the conditions weren’t really suitable for a player who travels with the ball.”
Mark Proctor knows all about Park having coached him at Under-18 level.
In his role as new first team coach, he can now keep a close eye on the former Sacred Heart School pupil’s progress.
“In Cameron Park we have a wonderful young player. We seem to produce these left-siders – Adam Johnson, Chris Brunt, Stewart Downing, that’s not a bad trio of lefties is it?
“The critical thing with a young player is they go in the team in the right circumstances so that they are ready to go in and they are ready to deal with the environment and challenge ahead.”
